What does “luck” mean in fantasy football?

A head-to-head win tells you that one team outscored one scheduled opponent. It does not tell you whether that score was strong across the league. A manager can post the second-highest score of the week and lose to the highest scorer, while another manager wins with the second-lowest score. Both results count equally in the official standings, but they describe very different performances.

Was It Luck? separates those ideas. We retain the official Sleeper result, then compare each team's weekly points with every other team in the same league. This produces an all-play view of performance that is independent of the randomly assigned opponent. We call the season total Effective Wins; the gap between actual wins and Effective Wins is shown as Stolen Wins. Positive does not mean a manager did anything wrong, and negative does not guarantee they drafted well. It measures matchup fortune, not every form of skill.

A worked example

Questions the analysis can answer

• Did my record match my weekly scoring? Compare actual wins with Effective Wins.
• Who had the friendliest schedule? Review the largest positive matchup gap and test a Calendar Swap.
• Would another manager's opponents have changed my season? Keep your scores, borrow their schedule and recalculate every result.
• Who owns the rivalry? Use multi-season head-to-head records to find each manager's nemesis and most favourable opponent.
• Was the champion also the strongest weekly scorer? Compare the official finish with all-play performance and total points.

These are descriptive statistics based on completed Sleeper matchups. They are not projections, betting advice or proof that one manager is objectively better than another. Injuries, waiver availability, trades, lineup choices and league rules all add context that a score-only comparison cannot capture.

Sleeper-first, with transparent inputs

The analyser uses public data returned by Sleeper for the username and league you select: league settings, rosters, managers, weekly matchups, points and linked historical seasons. You do not need to share a Sleeper password. Optional Was It Luck? accounts can save selected leagues and combine supported history across seasons; the public analyser still works from a Sleeper username.

Scoring remains exactly as configured in the source Sleeper league, whether it is standard, half-PPR, full-PPR or a custom setup. That makes comparisons valid inside one league. Raw point totals should not be compared across different scoring systems without accounting for those settings.
